Graphic Designing : A Brief Overview

You see, all those amazing websites, flyers, business cards, invitations and “one and only one-those catchy advertisements” . The possibilities are endless…

But who is a Graphic Designer ?

A graphic designer is an individual responsible for creating graphics to publish or print letter pads, advertisements, brochures and even illustrations, user interfaces and web designs. A graphic designer is also responsible to present information in such a way that it is easily memorable.

Qualifications

An individual may obtain degree such as B.A. , B.C.A , MPhil or PhD in Graphic Designing. But it is creativity which is the most important thing in graphic designing. These degrees are mandatory only if an individual wants to work full time on graphic designing ( Be a dedicated Graphic Designer).

But if one wants to work part time or be a freelancer the degree is not at all, a compulsion. Tools Required

A graphic designer is required to be proficient in in one or more graphic designing softwares. Popular ones are as follows:

  • Adobe Photoshop ( for raster images )
  • Adobe Illustrator (for vector Graphics)
  • Adobe InDesign ( for template and magazine designing)
  • Corel Draw Graphics Suite
  • Adobe XD ( website prototyping)
  • GIMP: This one is the best. Open Source.

While all these softwares are extensively used by professionals, the given softwares might suit a beginner :

  • Adobe spark
  • Canva
  • Gravit.io
  • PS Touch
The good news is that the above listed softwares are available to be installed in smartphones as well.

Scope

From website prototyping to brand logo design, from banner design to designing business cards , the scope of graphic designing is increasing day by day as we are seeing nowadays.

Why to be a Graphic Designer?

Ok it’s time to tackle the question of the day : why to be a Graphic Designer? Let us Begin.

  1. Easy to start : Although being an interesting and long journey, it is easy to get started with graphic designing. You don’t require experience ( in the beginning you need not have experience) in this field all you require is your brain and creativity. Graphic designing is not taught, it comes from within. A good start would be to practice from online templates from websites such as Canva as these are handy to work with.
  2. Desire to learn : Being a graphic designer you will always have a desire to learn and create new things. Making a design that is unique takes a lot of efforts and creativity and so you will be constantly pondering over new things and ideas, all due to the desire to learn. So now you know your job. RIGHT?
  3. High Demand: From business cards to packaged goods, from websites to ” the thing without which you cannot imagine your day ” Advertisements – OK jokes apart. It only takes a designer to imagine all those possibilities. Even the sky is not a limit.
  4. Never stopping being inspired : Believe me , graphic designing is not a boring job at all. This is because as a day progress, trends change and so will ideas . So you will never get time to feel demotivated.

Where to learn from?

There are a number of online learning platforms such as YouTube, Udemy, edX, coursEra etc from which you can find courses from professionals on graphic designing and the tools which you are going to use in your journey to be a GD.
